I was really moved by this TED Talk (see below). A makeup artist talks about how her clients apologize for their faces when they sit in her makeup chair.  But she feels, as I do, that all women are beautiful, whether they have makeup on or not.  The makeup is there to help us feel confident and go out into the world armed with a feeling of being pretty.

The same goes for my photography.  I think about it as photographing women to show them how I see them - through my lens.  I don't see flaws when I look at a woman's face. I see life and light inside. I see a beautiful soul, and experiences. I see someone who is absolutely unique to this world, who has distinctive features all her own. I see faces that have seen things I have not, that have experienced the world from behind those eyes.

I don't coldly snap pictures and then try to change what people look like in Photoshop.  I photograph a PERSON.  I try to get to know my clients - who they are at their core.  Then I photograph that individual in a way that tries to capture their personality and the beautiful soul inside them.

Yes, I do use Photoshop, and that's OK. No one wants to see my pimples or dark shadows under my eyes because I didn't sleep last night.  I don't think of myself with dark shadows, so I don't want to see myself with dark shadows in photographs.  But I will never alter someone's features or change them into someone they're not.  I prefer to slim the body with a flattering pose. I prefer to create a gorgeous portrait with wonderful light. Photoshop is a tool I use, but my primary tools are beautiful light, great posing, and the right lenses.

So as you watch this TED Talk, think hard. Do you ever apologize for your face? For your hair? For your body?  I know I've done it. But let's make a promise to ourselves to accept who we are, and love that no one in the world is like us. We are unique. We are women of this world, and we are all beautiful.

It’s about shining from the inside ...

Do you exist in photos?

When was the last time you had a beautiful portrait of yourself? Most women haven’t had a professional portrait made since high school because they think they can no longer have a beautiful image.

Capturing your image is not only for you, but for the generations who follow behind.

What photos will you leave behind to define your life? The drunk pictures taken in a mirror of a pub toilet, the old formal and cheesy school pictures you had taken 20 years ago that make you cringe, OR gorgeous portraits that represent who you really are, and make you look and feel like the very best version of yourself, which make you proud to show off who you are at this very moment in time?

What I create are beautiful portraits of women, women who don’t feel camera worthy. Women whose sexiness comes from who she is as a person. Where a woman is celebrated. She not only looks amazing, but she feels amazing.

You must celebrate your life. I don’t care how fat you think you are, I don’t care how old you think you are. My job, as a portrait photographer, is to take the most beautiful photograph you have ever seen of yourself, so that you can cherish this for the rest of your life.”

Here are 4 Things You Should Know about Photography Shoots

1) YOU THINK THE PICTURES ARE FOR YOUR HUSBAND, BUT YOU'RE WRONG.

Many clients come to me thinking they will give their husbands or partners these images as a gift, but almost always, when they see their portraits, they realize that these photographs were really for themselves.  The session and the images made them feel powerful, beautiful, sexy -- and it turns out the session was a gift for themselves.

2) SCHEDULE A PRE-CONSULTATION.

If the idea of getting in front of the camera makes you nervous, contact the photographer and make a pre-consultation appointment.

I always have pre-consultations with my clients because it is important to get to know each other, develop trust, and to see if we are a good fit for each other. I want to put you at ease and answer all your questions – what should I wear, what will it cost, when can I see my photographs? I want to know where you plan to hang these images or are you considering, so we can create a custom photo session to fit these spaces.

Get a feel for the studio, the photographer, the quality of the products and the overall vibe. If it's not a good fit, you should keep looking.

With all my clients, I like to follow their lead. If they bring in very conservative clothes, I pose them accordingly. If they bring in lingerie or a sexy dress, I know they're interested in bring out that side of themselves in photographs.  I work to make my clients feel comfortable, and develop a strong sense of trust between us.

3) "I JUST WANT DIGITALS."

No, actually, if you are only being offered digitals, you are being done a disservice.

Holding a beautiful portrait of yourself in your hands gives you a powerful feeling.  You connect with the image both as something visual to look at, and as a real, solid object to treasure and appreciate.  For Elegant Beauty shoots, I recommend my image folio boxes. These are artisan, custom made boxes that look beautiful on a bookshelf. They are filled with a beautiful set of mounted images that can be taken out and framed individually and hung in the bedroom, hallway, walk-in closet, or in the bath. Switch them out for new images every so often to remind yourself that you are beautiful.

4)  "I'LL JUST FIND A PHOTOGRAPHER ON GROUPON"

Beware discount photographers. Theirs could be a high-volume studio that will get you in and out quickly with no finesse. An Elegant Beauty portrait session is a very personal thing, and you will want someone to lead you gently through the experience.  My sessions include a personal styling and wardrobe consultation, an hour of hair and makeup, multiple outfit changes, and we can shoot as many or as few looks as you like.  Your portrait viewing session is never rushed, and I will guide you and help you with your selections. Yes, you will have to pay more for that experience, but you will come away with a far more luxurious experience and absolutely beautiful portraits.

If you are considering an Elegant Beauty photography session, please give us a call and we will get to know each other.  Then you can decide if it is for you. Or if you want to share it with your daughter, sister, mom or best friend.

How do you dream of being photographed? Are you the girl next door? A romantic? A Vixen? Isn’t time to feel like a supermodel?

As a woman, you are extraordinary. You are doing something amazing for someone else at every stage of a relationship. At the beginning, you are giving someone love, support, and meaning by being a partner. If you are pregnant, you are performing the miraculous task of bringing new life into the world and bonding a family. As a mother, you are nurturing and guiding that remarkable family through countless stages. All the while, you are giving support and understanding to others, most especially your spouse or partner. At the same time, you are becoming more unique as a person – the special combination of experiences and relationships that you have is unlike any other in the world.

At every one of these stages, you are priceless and irreplaceable. What you do is beautiful. Who you are is beautiful. You are beautiful.

One gift you can give to yourself and those who mean something in your life is beautiful images – ones that reflect your remarkable uniqueness. It’s certainly hard to put yourself in the spotlight, but having the courage to let yourself shine is an extraordinary gift you can give to both you and those you love!

brenPhotography offers many types of personal photography. We can provide images that are fun and family-friendly, and we can also offer images that are more romantic and sensual. Or I can capture a range of images in one session.

We recommend that women get professional images taken every 5 years or so…to capture your own unique style and personality at every stage. It is important to do this for both those we love and ourselves – we all deserve to see ourselves at our most beautiful!

What makes us stop liking to look at ourselves in the mirror? Why do we stop seeing what we like and start focusing on the things we don’t?

Can we learn something from these women and girls?
