What should I wear to my Personal Branding photo shoot?

How to prepare for your Personal Branding Portrait session

We are making our first impressions to clients, employers and business partners without even being physically present. Social media, such as Facebook and Linked-In are telling the story of our personal and professional lives for us. Our profile photographs are making an impact! Simple as they may seem at first glance, your headshots should be subtly crafted to reflect the individual branding of your business.

GENERAL PREPARATION TIPS

Drink a lot of water for a day or 2 before your session - it keeps your skin hydrated, and bags under the eyes minimal. Of course, a good night’s sleep helps also!

CLOTHING

When selecting what to wear, remember you want your prospect to notice you, not your clothing. Dress head to toe. You clothing should include business, business casual, or your branding/uniform - whatever is appropriate for your branding. Although we are technically making a headshot, how you feel, and your total body position affects the look of the entire portrait. Jewelry should be kept simple, so it does not overpower.

Most of all wear something you feel comfortable and terrific in. Solid colors work best. If you are scheduled for later in the day, you may want to bring your outfit choice on a hanger and change right before your photo. This will prevent wrinkling. Wrinkled clothing will show up on camera.

Glasses: Avoid glasses, especially tinted glasses, if at all possible. They compromise the lighting and distort facial lines. Pop the lenses out or borrow a pair of frames. Tinted glasses are virtually impossible to work with.

HAIR/MAKEUP

Overall light makeup is best, (too much blush can look like bruising). Pack your makeup so if we find you need more, we can add it. However, I do recommend 2 light coats of mascara (with no clumps), to emphasize the eyes, the most important part of your photograph.

Hands: Be sure your nails are clean. Polish, if used should not be chipped.

If you plan to get a haircut, please do so at least a week in advance so the cut can “settle in”.

Feel free to give me a call if you want to discuss any details (such as “oh no I have nothing to wear!”).
